When he left I was glad, because at least now he'd know.
He wouldn't think I was dead, or in China.
Now he knows I'm okay;
He knows he's free.
Happy Birthday, dad.

  5. This has such a sad tone to it. "Now he knows I'm okay;
    He knows he's free." - This makes me imagine a dad reuniting with a grown child, but doesn't give the feeling of a lasting bond.

  6. An unusual Birthday gift from a son-only a parent can understand the anxiety that "not knowing"causes-even of a grown up child-very touching,I like it:-)

    1. in truth, this poem is about the passing of my dad, which happened last march. yesterday was his birthday, and i was thinking about how, near the end of his life he was really bound by physical and mental issues. at one point he told my mom that i had died. another time, he told her i had moved overseas to work.

      so this is really about how the fog has lifted, and he really is well, and free...

      thanks for taking the time to stop by - s.

  13. Yep. When my dad was passing at hospice, they told us he might need us to tell him we were going to be okay and that he was free to let go and end his suffering. Beautiful work. Thanks for sharing it.
